RVP opened scoring

Manchester United claimed a deserved 2-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday as Sir Alex Ferguson's men end the weekend top of the Premier League. Robin van Persie silenced the travelling Gunners with an opening goal inside three minutes  as United opened up a nine-point league lead over their North London rivals.

Van Persie broke the deadlock in the opening exchanges as Arsenal's wobbly defence failed to deal with a tame cross from full-back Rafael, and the Dutch striker was on hand to pick up the loose ball and drill a cool finish beyond the reach of Vito Mannone.

United had a superb opportunity to double the lead shortly before half-time from the penalty spot. Wayne Rooney, who had been denied a goal earlier thanks to a fine Mannone save, fired wide from twelve yards after Santi Carzola handled the ball in the box.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men continued to look more dangerous - and the hosts finally doubled their lead on 67 minutes as Patrice Evra met a delightful cross from Rooney with a fine header.

Matters got worse for Arsenal after Jack Wilshire was dismissed for a second yellow card, but they grabbed late consolation as Carzola's effort from the edge of the box proved too good for David De Gea at the death. It was, however, too little and too late.

With Swansea City claiming a point at home to Chelsea, and Manchester City managing a goalless draw at West Ham, United sit one point clear at the top of the table after ten league games. Attentions now turn to the Champions League, with United looking to maintain their faultless record in the competition this season at Braga on Wednesday evening.

I'm surprised how tame Arsenal have become in matches against us. They didn't test us at all and I am equally as surprised that Vermaelen is their captain because they have had some great captains in the past. The man is useless. You do not make those sort of idiotic mistakes with RVP right there. What a clinical finish from him.

A well deserved win. One more thing, I am not even going to touch the Santos topic.

Arsenal are in trouble IMO, not just in the PL but in general as a team. There are all sorts of stories around, mostly press banter but there are defo morale issues and it showed against us. I'm not sure they are going to be a force to be reckoned with for a while...
