Former Manchester United man Lou Macari believes the club’s mounting injury woes will force Sir Alex Ferguson to seek to sign reinforcements during the January transfer window. The Scottish midfielder has expressed concern that injury problems could derail United’s Premier League title ambitions.

Macari, who spent over a decade at United, feels that United may turn to the transfer market amid growing injury concerns.

The Red Devils have been missing a host of important players in recent weeks, with defeats against Blackburn and Newcastle damaging United’s hopes of retaining the Premier League championship.

Darren Fletcher and Nemanja Vidic are long-term absentees for the Champions, whilst the likes of Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans, Fabio Da Silva, Michael Owen, Tom Cleverley and Ashley Young remain on the sidelines.

Sir Alex Ferguson has denied that United will be looking for new additions during the January transfer window, but Macari feels the injury woes may change his fellow Scot’s stance.

Macari, speaking to TalkSport, said: "People are saying United will win the league because they've got the experience. But that experience counts for nothing if you've not got your full squad available.

"The injury list is so bad he'll certainly be looking for one or two players. I don't know if he'll get them, but I don't see that there are two or three young players (at the club) ready to go in and play week in, week out."

Macari made 401 appearances for United, scoring on 97 occasions. He hit the net during his debut – a 2-2 draw against West Ham United in 1973.
