United travel to St.James’ Park on Wednesday evening needing a win to keep up pace with league leaders Manchester City. The Red Devils slipped three points behind their fierce rivals after Roberto Mancini’s men claimed a crucial home win over Liverpool on Tuesday.

First-half goals from Aguero and Toure put the Citizens well on their way to a 3-0 victory over Liverpool, ensuring Mancini’s men open up a three point gap at the top of the Premier League table.

James Milner’s late penalty sealed the win for City, despite the earlier dismissal of Gareth Barry for two bookable offences.

United will be hoping to pull back level with City almost immediately as they travel to Newcastle on Wednesday, with the Toon struggling to maintain their form in recent weeks.

After challenging towards the top of the table for much of the first half of the season, the Barcodes have picked up only five points from their last eight league games and have slipped to seventh.

The Red Devils will be eager to impress in the North East following the shock defeat to Blackburn, with Wayne Rooney expected to return for United in attack amid speculation about his relationship with manager Sir Alex Ferguson. 

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Martin O’Neill continued his fine start to life as Sunderland boss with victory at Wigan; whilst Spurs are now within touching distance of United after a narrow home win against West Brom.
