Coaching role for RG?

Ahead of his 600th league appearance for Manchester United, Ryan Giggs has rubbished reports that he could make a return to the Welsh international squad in a playing capacity. However, the influential winger has held talks with new Wales boss Gary Speed about hooking up with his countrymen in a backroom capacity.

Speculation had suggested that Giggs would be open to talks of donning the Welsh jersey once again after Speed was appointed boss.

However, the Manchester United veteran has ruled out any return in a playing capacity.

Giggs said: "I retired from international football to prolong my career and give me that rest during the season when I needed that and I have done that."

He added that he did not think "think going back for one or two games" was on the cards. 

Instead, Giggs has held talks with Speed about taking on a backroom role with the Welsh national team.

Capped 64 times for his country, the 37-year-old is understood to have expressed interest in taking on a coaching role – and could also be used in an ambassadorial capacity.

Cardiff-born Giggs added: "I've always said I would love to come back and coach or manage Wales and hopefully be part of a team that qualifies for a major championship."

On the news, Speed has said: "We'd like to have him in any capacity that he likes". 

Despite being only four years older than Giggs, Speed has already touted the Red Devils star as his potential successor.
