United's 2-0 win over Spurs steeped in controversy

Nani scored a late goal steeped in controversy as Manchester United edged a 2-0 victory over Spurs at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are now unbeaten in ten Premier League outings.

The controversy arrived with six minutes to go. 

As Spurs searched for an equaliser, Nani clearly handled the ball in the Tottenham penalty area and goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes rolled the ball forward for a free-kick. 

However, referee Mark Clattenburg had never actually awarded the free-kick and as Gomes prepared to strike the ball, Nani cheekily poked the ball home. Spurs were fuming, United jubilant and, suddenly, an end-to-end contest was over.

Nani's unique goal doubled United's advantage after Nemanja Vidic's opener on the half-hour mark. He headed home Nani's free-kick as the Red Devils extended their fantastic unbeaten run over the North London club to 26 matches.

Spurs played some excellent attacking football and Rafael Van der Vaart, who later hobbled off, struck the woodwork.

However, though Spurs enjoyed some fine moments, United were worthy of three points with Sir Alex Ferguson's men missing a number of chances, namely from Ji-Sung Park who struck the woodwork on the eight-minute mark.

were united worth the win?
clearly a manchester view here (red half), i thought a draw would be a fair result.
as for the nani goal, you call it cheeky, had that goal been at the over end & scored by van der vart, what would you have called it then?
i think that the ref & linesman would have needed a police escort from the ground.
fergie & rio would've probably been a little different in their remarks also, eh?
still i'd rather lose fairly than win in that manner (good to see nani is filling the ronaldo shoes (or should i say diving shorts?) nicely.

At the end of the day...it was contreversial, but 1-0 is still as much 3 points as 2-0

Spurs had 1 real clear cut chance when VDV hit the post, after that I thought we were the better team

So lets talk the second goal......

1. Nani went down to claim a penalty, was or wasnt it a pen? im not totally sure but if not then he should have been booked for diving

2. Nani stopped the ball with his hand in protest that it should have been a penalty, the ref SAW this but because Gomes had the ball in his hands he gave advantage

3. Gomes puts the ball on the floor when he should have kicked it out of his hands, it cannot be called offside because the attacking team did not put the ball in a position where they could gain unfair advantage, therefore its a legitamite goal because of the referee's decision

It is not Nani's, the ref's, the linesman's or Manchester United's fault that Gomes is a spastic. Even kids know to play to the whistle. He was given advantage ran forward about 15 yards and placed the ball down. Why not just kick it out of his hands? the linos ran up the pitch and there has been no whistle. If it was the other way round I'd be lambasting Van der Sar. The ref had waved play on, Nani even had time to ask the ref!

We'll have perfectly good goals chalked of this year i'm sure and some controversial ones aswell. If gomes had just taken advantage of the advantage he was given ndlaunched the ball from his hands. rather than try to take a "freekick" 16 yards further forward than any offence that happened n-one woul be moaning. Gomes is to blame, no-one else.

And ped United were definately worth the win. Possesion was split relatively evenly but united were far more dangerous with it having just under double the amout of shots on goal that tottenham had.
