New deal signed

As ManUtdWeb predicted, Wayne Rooney has performed a remarkable U-turn and has penned a new contract with Manchester United. The England frontman has signed a new five-year deal with the Red Devils; bringing an end intense speculation and drama about the player’s future.

Only days ago, Rooney confirmed in a statement that he was fully intent on leaving United and questioned the club’s ability to sign top players.

However, Rooney has now put pen-to-paper on a new 5 year deal which will keep him at the club until May 2015.

Ferguson has said he is "delighted" that Rooney has penned a new contract.

Rooney appears to have retracted a number of his earlier comments, saying in a statement "I said on Wednesday the manager's a genius and it's his belief and support that convinced me to stay."

He added: "I'm delighted to sign another deal at United. I've spoken to the manager and the owners and they've convinced me this where I belong.

"I am signing a new deal in the absolute belief that the management, coaching staff, board and owners are totally committed to making sure United maintains its proud winning history - which is the reason I joined the club in the first place".

The player is now being lauded as a hero by many United fans – but for others, it will be difficult to forget the high drama of recent days.

Protestors gathered outside Rooney's Cheshire home on Wednesday evening after Rooney confirmed his intention to leave the club. Around 30 people are said to have demonstrated against the player's lack of loyalty which may have contributed towards his sudden change of heart.

After a disastrous World Cup and a string of media reports about his private life, Rooney has performed poorly this season. It is now up to the former Everton man to prove his worth to the club and recapture his top form.

Rooney has been at United since 2004 when the Red Devils beat off competition from Newcastle United to sign the £25.6million man. He has since been hailed as one of the world’s finest footballers.

Wow... no posts over a range of subjects.Strange.Not a criticism cos'I haven't been on for ages,Still strange tho.Anyway,are people glad he is staying?Or just bemused that he would dare to even think about leaving Utd? C'mon someone respond pleaze...cos I want to get into this 'lack of ambition' businesss.

I have no opinion on him anymore. I'm black and white that way.

Whatever way people spin it to make him look good, he either wanted to leave, or drain more monetary resources from a club in turmoil.

Should have just left.

he might still do so. It just a ploy, Fergie spends a load of money in January and Rooney goes in the summer. His fee pays for our transfer dealings and also helps pay of the debt. And the fans are made mugs of again.

Interesting Briansmurph.Interesting.And I suspect that you will not be alone in your stance.Personally I have never been comfotable with the geezer.This world class things.....noooo. World class does it when it really matters,at the very highest level.And he hasn't? Two champsleague finals-nothing.And as for England!! Agree with you,should have been sold.Trouble is...Sell Ronaldo for £80 million.£50 million for the scouser.In the past the top guys have been sold (usually when SAF thought it was right do do so) & then replaced with as good/better.That doesn't happen now.Players are sold to service the debt.Money just disappears into a black hole.During the last few years the lack of new quality has been supported by hanging onto Giggs, Scholes & Neville.That we have had do that shows the state that this club is in.Excellent players we all know, but in the past (with top quality coming in) they would have been retired long before now.I said it here last season,too many ordinary footballers.Anderson,Park,Rafael,Macaeda.I could go on.I keep hearing Hargreaves name.For f***s the guys finished!How come Spurs can sign Van Der Vart?Would have thought that he could do a good job in our cetral midfield.But seemingly not.Instead on we go with plodders like Carrick.Tough times ahead methinks, but even so, we should have sold that scouse t**t.

I personally think he's still the most talented forward in English football. If he shuts up behaves himself and scores goals all will be forgiven and he could yet become a United legend.

Do the talking on THE pitch Wayne.

The above posted comments all have merit though.

All I do know is the money paid out is obscene to ALL top flight footballers.

75% of me wants him out because he's shown no loyalty or trust in his teammates at all. Privately, those who care, must be thinking what a git he is. The other 25% hopes he proves me wrong big time. After several years with man U I'm still not convinced there is anything special about him. Fergies been clever here IMEHO, he hopes he can get his confidence and some sort of form back and sell him for a packet.

I am unsure about the whole saga to be honest.....i do believe he wanted to leave and it wasn't a ploy for more money. I also believe he might still want to go!

could this be an arrangement between club and player to agree a new deal so that when we agree to sell him we will receive a decent fee as opposed to th25m we probably would have had in january?

or has he been convinced to stay by the promise of new players?

I doubt we will be shelling out on any world class stars anytime soon and if we did sell him I think we best have some kind of exchange and money deal because the glazers will pocket the cash without any doubt!

People say SAF used Rooney as a pawn to force the Glazers hand's on shelling out the $$$ for players.

I dont care what happned, i still think Rooney's a cnut.

World Class? When did he prove that?
