Can Roon bag 50?

Wayne Rooney has revealed his long-held ambition to break Sir Bobby Charlton’s England goalscoring record before his international career is over. United’s powerhouse frontman is already half-way to Charlton’s record of 49 strikes and has discussed breaking the record with the Reds director.

Rooney has bagged 25 England goals from 55 appearances.

That's still someway behind Charlton's record 49 international strikes - but Rooney, who is still only 23, is hopeful he can break the record.

"I spoke to Sir Bobby last week about it and we discussed playing and scoring for England," said Rooney, speaking to the Daily Star.

"It would be a dream come true to do it and mean so much to me. It would also be fantastic if two Manchester United players were to be one and two in the list."

Rooney knows, however, that team-mate Michael Owen could yet bag the record for himself. The diminutive number seven has 40 England goals to his name, but will need to work his way back into Fabio Capello's squad.

"Don't rule out Michael and he still has a chance of the record." added Roon.

It's amazing to think that a player of Rooney's maturity is still only 23. All the signs suggest that he still has a long England career ahead of him, but will he bag enough goals to break Charlton's record? Join in the debate on the messaegeboard.
