Owen's home bow

Manchester United completed their pre-season schedule with a 2-0 victory over Valencia at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney and Tom Cleverley hit the target in front of 74,311 supporters at the Theatre of Dreams.

After his excellent pre-season to date, many eyes were focussed firmly on Michael Owen as Valencia visited Old Trafford on Wednesday evening. However, the former Liverpool frontman missed a hatful of chances with England boss Fabio Capello watching from the stands with his next England squad announced on Saturday.

For United, however, it was another pre-season friendly victory with Rooney and Cleverley hitting the target. The deadlock was broken on 52 minutes as Rooney rose high to nod home a cross from Antonio Valencia, whilst a cool finish from 19-year-old youngster Cleverley sealed the victory late in the day.

This was an impressive display from United who created plenty of opportunities against their touring Spanish opponents. The win caps a good pre-season work-out for Sir Alex Ferguson's men - soured only by defeat on penalties to Bayern Munich in the final of the Audi Cup competition.

Things start to get a bit more serious now with United travelling to Wembley to face Chelsea in the Community Shield; before newly-promoted Birmingham City travel to Salford for the kick-off of the new league campaign next Sunday.
