Sir Alex Ferguson was disappointed with United’s performance – but the Red Devils still did enough to book their place in the European Cup quarter-finals. Nemanja Vidic and Cristiano Ronaldo were the goalscorers as Fergie’s men secured a 2-0 win to dump Jose Mourinho's Internazionale out of the competition.

United got off to an excellent start as Vidic rose to meet a Ryan Giggs cross and nod the ball home after only four minutes.

Old Trafford was rocking - but the one-goal lead left United in a particularly precarious position as Inter created and wasted a host of opportunities.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic hit the woodwork with a first-half header, whilst Dejan Stankovic also squandered an excellent opportunity as United looked sloppy in midfield and regularly handed possession to the Italians.

Intense nerves across the terraces were relaxed somewhat four minutes after the break as Ronaldo met Wayne Rooney's floating cross with a powerful header to double United's advantage.

The away-goals rule, however, meant United's position was never secure and Inter threatened a late comeback with Adriano smashing a powerful effort against Edwin van der Sar's left post.

Thankfully, thanks mainly to Inter's wayward finishing, United held on to book their place in the last eight of the competition and keep alive the dream of achieving the greatest success in footballing history.
