Fergie hoping Rio will be fit for Chelsea clash

Sir Alex Ferguson hopes to have Rio Ferdinand back in action in time for the crucial Premier League encounter with Chelsea next Sunday. The England defender has been absent since picking up a back injury in the warm-up of United’s 1-0 win at Stoke City. United will be anxious to have the towering centre-half back in time for the visit of the title-hunting Pensioners

Ferdinand has already missed United's narrow wins over Stoke and Middlesbrough - and will play no part in the upcoming F.A Cup game against Southampton, nor the League Cup first-leg tie at Derby.

Ferguson remains hopeful that the player will be back in action for United's top-of-the-table clash with Chelski next Sunday.

"He's still not training. It's not a major one but it's frustrating.

"We'll manage it the best we can. He won't be playing in the next two games but hopefully he'll be ready for the big one against Chelsea."
