Intense press speculation suggests that Manchester United are moving closer to the high-profile capture of Spurs frontman Dimitar Berbatov. The Bulgarian international, who netted 23 times last season, has been a long-term target for the European champions and reports claim that Sir Alex Ferguson is edging closer to a £28million deal.

Ferguson is keen to boost his attacking options over the summer - and regards Berbatov as an ideal addition to his European Cup-winning squad.

The 27-year-old joined Spurs little over two years ago in an £11million deal from Bayer Leverkusen. He has since proved a sensation at White Hart Lane - scoring 44 goals in his first two seasons with the club.

United have been linked with the striker for some time - and his agent, Emil Danchev, has once again stirred things up by claiming genuine interest from the Red Devils for his client.

Danchev said: "I can hereby tell with certainty that Manchester United have expressed an interest in Berbatov,"

The agent hit the backpages last December when he claims Berbatov was itching to leave Spurs in search of silverware. Whilst his words came to nothing - United were claimed to be leading the chase at that time too.
