Athletico Madrid and Juventus are reportedly battling it out for the signing of United’s highly-rated young defender Gerard Pique. The 21-year-old has enjoyed only limited first-team appearances with the Red Devils, and would welcome a move to one of Europe's top clubs if he was guaranteed more regular matches.

The Spaniard has made only a handful of senior starts under Sir Alex Ferguson and looks unlikely to break into the first-team anytime soon.

The situation has alerted both Athletico Madrid and Juventus - who look set to battle it out over the summer for the player's signature.

Atleti are short on defensive options and may regard Pique as an excellent addition to their threadbare backline. The La Liga club have already signed Ajax's John Heitinga as they aim to strengthen for next season.

Juve boss Claudo Ranieri is also interested in snapping up the youngster Pique and that could prompt a bidding war between the two clubs.

Should we let Pique go? Have your say on the messageboard.
