Liverpool full-back Alvaro Arbeloa has foolishly predicted that Fernando Torres will beat Cristiano Ronaldo's to this year's Footballer of the Year award. Ronaldo has been tipped to pick up a whole host of end of season gongs, but Arbeloa, Torres’ Scouse team-mate, has suggested otherwise. Ronny came in second for the 2007 Ballon d'Or and won the PFA Players' Player and Young Player of the Year.
Ronaldo's breathtaking form continued on Saturday evening as he opened the scoring and produced a man of the match display as the Reds trounced Villa 4-0 at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old has already scored 35 goals from midfield this season - and is tipped by most pundits to win a cabinet full of trophies at the end of the season; including the PFA Players' Player of the Year and the Football Writers' award.

However, Arbeloa thinks that Torres has had the better season.

"Ronaldo's confidence level is so high everything he tries seems to come off and he is a step ahead of everyone else at the moment." said the Spaniard.

"Alex Hleb of Arsenal and Chelsea's Joe Cole have also caught my eye but Torres has been massive for us.

"He has created a lot of goals for himself and is on a par with the best and I am sure he will be voted Footballer of the Year ahead of Ronaldo."
