Sir Alex Ferguson has launched a scathing attack on football agents as tedious negotiations over Wesley Brown's future with the club rumble on. The England defender, who has spent his whole career at Old Trafford, has rejected the club's £40,000-per-week offer and Ferguson has been left seething at the news.

Brown's agent Paul Martin is understood to have told his client to accept no less than £50,000-per-week from United.

"Players of today live in their agents' pockets - it's a situation which really depresses me," said Ferguson.

Clearly, loyalty has gone out of the window. Brown is not the world's most talented defender and he has certainly had his bad spells with the club. However, Sir Alex has persevered with the player who is now playing an important role at right-back due to the long-term absence of club captain Gary Neville.

"It's in his hands. It's not in our hands," added Fergie. "We wouldn't have made the offer if we hadn't had faith in him. Wes knows this and the other players have told him."

If Brown's greed persists and he doesn't sign a new deal then the defender will be eligible to leave the club on a free transfer in the summer.

I don't know if it's a question of his loyalty, he must be looking around at some of the other defenders in our squad and be slightly puzzled. None, with the exception of Neville have been there half the time he has yet they all earn more than he does, it has to work both ways surely?

He's already stuck with us for 12 years with limited first team opportunities on 30k a week, turned down numerous offers of first team football to try and fight for a first team place at United. Knowing he's going to be understudy to the skipper when/if he returns, what's the harm in giving him the 50k a week?

Loyalty?? Who's the one who's stood by him every time he's been injured?! The others earn more because they are better than him. For most of the season he's been abysmal going forward, failing to complete some of the most basic passes, and defensively its too easy to get past him sometimes, he's prone to switching off and gives stupid free kicks away in dangerous areas. Who the @#$%& does he think he is?

Wes Brown's professional career lasts about 10 years. Like every other footballer, he's just trying to make hay while the sun shines. Im not saying anyone should think that 50k a week isnt obsene or greedy, but Wes Brown is just another example of a wages situation that has spun out of control. A salary cap system would make things far less inflated, and bring some much needed parity to the game.

the made hatter your as thick as a brick that brown has more assist then ronaldo does this season

it is unfair that the starting 11 get paid much much more then him, this year his been our 1st choice right back

If he wants to go let him go. Danny simpson can easily replace him. Frankly i would be happy with £50 per week if it meant i could play for united.

Hey up lads - wes is being offered a good deal to play for the club he supports, and I for one think it's about time the sillty money being offered to good but not outstanding players is stopped.

My season ticket goes up year after year beyond the pay rises I get!

It wouldn't be a huge loss would it? The guy quite clearly doesn't want to play for United anymore and just cares about money. If that wasn't the case then he would have already signed the contract.

Get rid because quite frankly I've never seen anything particulary worth while from him.
