United made eleven changes from the team that started against Liverpool on Sunday, and were lucky to come away from Gresty Road with a victory. The home side pushed the Red Devils all the way and only a late goal by debutant Kieron Lee saved their blushes.
United have been drawn away at Southend United in the next round, but will have to play better than this if they are to keep hold of the trophy they won last Spring in Cardiff. Ole gave then a good start with a well taken goal in the first half but Crewe came back to level and push the game into extra time. Excellent vocal support from the travelling reds who gave the home fans the full repetoire of songs deserved a better performance.
Still a win is a win, andSmithy and Heinze came through two hours of football unscathed.....
