The press have been strongly linking United with a big-money move for Fernando Torres, but the Spanish striker held a press conference on Tuesday to confirm he will stay with Atletico Madrid. The 22-year-old had been noted as a potential replacement for Ruud Van Nistelrooy. New Page 1

United transfer target Fernando Torres has announced that he wishes to remain at Atletico Madrid for the forthcoming season.

With Ruud Van Nistelrooy expected to depart over the summer, United had been heavily linked with a big-money move for the 22-year-old, but Torres has made it clear his immediate future lies at the Vicente Calderon.

"I want to stay. If I had wanted to leave Atletico Madrid I would have done it years ago." said the Spaniard at a press conference on Tuesday.

"I feel fine here. There has been a lot of discussion about my possible exit but I am here for another year."

Torres is something of a cult figure with Atletico where has finished their top scorer for the past four seasons. If United were weighing up an offer for the forward, they will now have to look elsewhere with the press suggesting moves for Luca Toni and Jermaine Defoe could be on the cards.
