Wayne McDermott took the Vauxhall Motors annual Presentation night by storm, picking up three awards. He picked up Player of the Year, Players' Player of the Year as well as the gong for supporters player of the year. Vauxhall's unsung hero of last season was finally rewarded for his efforts on the pitch. The ex-Everton and Northwich left back (who can also operate left midfield) played more games than anyone else in a Vauxhall shirt with 53 (in all comps.), ironically he was the last Vauxhall Motors player to score his first and only goal of last season was in the home draw with Marine on the last game of the season. Wayne,22, signed from Leek Town in 2001.

Alvin McDonald told Ellesmere Port Pioneer, "Our success before Christmas was down to a terrific team effort, but when things went wrong later on and form dipped, Wayne was one person who continued to do well and you could count his number of bad games last season on one hand.

"I think his performance in the crucial Stalybridge game summed it up when he had a great player like Colin Potts in his back pocket.' McDermott joined the Motormen in the summer of 2001 from Leek Town, but his arrival at Rivacre Park was down to some unusual circumstances.

Alvin had heard of Waynes great performances for Leek, but couldn't get in contact with the young Liverpudlian.

He said, "I was after a left-sided player and I knew there was a Liverpool lad at Leek who was doing well, but I wasn't able to track him down.

"We then played Southport in a pre-season friendly and I asked their manager Phil Wilson whether there was anyone at his club who would fit the bill.

"He told me that a good player had trained with them over the summer but he'd not signed him because he'd already put together his squad and that player turned out to be Wayne."
