Match Preview: D.C. United Vs. Nottingham Forest.

The Reds kick-off their tour of the United States on Wednesday as they take on D.C. United at The RFK. The Americans are treating this as a big match and going to be playing a full strength side and really going for the win- apparently they're looking to build a rep. by beating a famous club!

Forest will take on one of America's top teams D.C. United this Wednesday as The Reds play their first game of the pre-season tour of The States at the RFK memorial, Washington.

Whilst journalists and advertisers in the American media are billing this game as "A once in a lifetime chance to see the twice European Champions in action," we as Forest fans are jumping at the opportunity to get a glimpse of star-of-the-future Freddy Adu and also their impressive stadium which is bigger than anything we have back home.

Whilst I am not lucky enough to have made the trip across the Atlantic, as sadly, I just did not have the funds; I will do my best to provide you with a match preview and report from the game.

About D.C. United...

DC United are one of the top teams in the MLS. At the moment they are playing their trade in the Eastern Conference division of this league and are in second place with The Metrostars, who are widely regarded as the countries top team, standing in their way.

Although the sport is a relatively new one over there and is still quite far behind their most popular forms of entertainment- Football and Basketball- DC United have still managed to fill their cabinet with a healthy range of trophies.

In 1996 DC beat Los Angeles Galaxy 3-2 in order to claim the MLS Cup for the first time. They were 2-0 behind in that game but managed to turn it around in a sensational comeback late in the second half. 1996 proved to be a very successful team for United as they also managed to win the US Open Cup after beating the Rochester Rhinos with a comfortable 3-0 win.

DC made American soccer history in 1998 and won the highest honour in Americas football: The CONCACAF Champions Cup. In order to win this trophy they beat the Mexican champions CD Toluca 1-0 at home in the final. United's other honours include 1998 Interamerican Cup Champions and being the 1999 MLS Cup winners.

RFK Stadium Directions... From National Airport

Exit The National Airport following signs for I-395 and 50 West to Washington. On G.Washington Parkway exit at I-395 North. Stay on 395 North, across the Potomac River, for approximately 3m. When you're past the Maine Avenue exit, stay in the left lane of the freeway. I-395 will exit to the right to the Capitol and Senate buildings. Stay left for the stadium. Proceed straight ahead in the left lanes to the exit at Sixth Street Southeast and Navy Yard. At bottom of the ramp go left at traffic light onto Sixth Street. Stay on 6th Street for .5 miles to Independence Avenue. Turn Right onto Independence Ave. and stay on Independence for 1.1 miles to 19th Street. Turn Left onto 19th Street and travel one block to East Capitol Street. Turn right on East Capitol to the stadium.
