Winning with a spectacular team performance or from a single moment of skill makes no difference three points is three points, yesterday Jamie Bain secured the three points with a goal that should secure him the goal of the month for October.

I’m going to start this report on a personal note, well an apology really for those who have enjoyed the match reports this season the two for Alloa and Forfar are missing because I wasn’t in attendance and I didn’t simply want to copy and paste other people’s hard work.

To yesterday’s match: It struck me when I saw the team sheet that Jimmy Boyle has more or less assembled a team of permanent players only Ridgers and possibly Muir are loan players and Neil McFarlane as “A Trialist” could be the final addition to the experienced pool we’ve been looking for.

In a strange coincidence both teams began the match with five first team changes since the 3 vs.1 Airdrie win at Stennie, the obvious changes for Airdrie were Stevenson, Forrest and McFarlane the not so obvious are Wallace and Muir. Neil McFarlane comes to us on trial after leaving Morton seven months ago, Gemmel and McCord are out with injuries, Devlin serves a suspension for his sending off last week and finally Stallard is serving a SFL and Club suspension for his sending off and subsequent abuse of the referee against Alloa.

So only two out of five of our regular midfielders took to the pitch which from my point of view I was happy with, Jimmy chose/was forced to go 4-4-2, instead of his usual attacking 4-5-1, which I prefer at home.

The first half was quite a boring affair both teams managed to cancel each other out and there were very few clear cut chances on goal, Airdrie’ closest came when Tony Watt fired across a low ball the Ryan Wallace tried to side foot in to the back of the net, he just didn’t get enough on it to force it by the Stenhousemuir keeper. Early in the match Watt also had a shot that McCluskey easily covered.

Those that travelled up to Stenhousemuir will have realised by now that this was a much stronger team than the one we met earlier in the season, which was disappointing as I think most people hoped this would be our first home victory of the season. You will also remember that the opening goal of that match came from Ryan McCord a free kick from 30 yards.

The second half began with the early substitution of Tony Watt, he had been complaining of chest pains or simply difficulty breathing in the first half and it was obvious he’d decided he’d had enough for one day. Scott Sally replaced him. (A little note for the official site, can we get the players page updated half the team seems to be missing).

Phil Johnston was replaced by Chris Craig on 61 minutes and Ryan Wallace was pushed out on to the right hand side here he has had a lot of joy in the last few weeks but the stalemate continued.

It took the final substitution to change the game, Muir was replaced by Donnelly and Boyle changed the formation from the 4-4-2 that had been holding Stenhousemuir, he switched to a 3-5-2 pushing Jamie Bain further up the field.

It almost paid dividends straight away, from well outside the penalty box Jamie Bain struck the ball sweetly and forced Chris McCluskey in to making an excellent save, he just managed to tip the ball over the cross bar, if we thought that would have been an excellent goal what followed was simply spectacular.

Two minutes later with the ball tamely being passed about by the Airdrie midfield Jamie Bain once again finds himself in a little bit of space the ball is played in to him at chest height, his over head kick gives McCluskey absolutely no chance as it finds the back of the net to give Airdrie a 1-0 lead.

“And there’s more” Airdrie are now the dominant force in this match and driving forward Jamie Bain once again in space receives a pass from Chris Craig he drives forward, past one defender round a second defender he shoots underneath McCluskey and it..........rattles off the post.

Jamie Bain our RIGHT BACK could quite easily have scored a spectacular hat trick in a 15 minute period but other than that there wasn’t much to write home about from this game well other than Ridgers got his first shutout of the season and Airdrie have now won our first home match of the season, our defence looked stronger and the midfield didn’t look under much pressure throughout the game.
