Highland league side Cove Rangers came to Airdrie yesterday and their fans brought with them a spirit that reminded me of us when we travel to take on bigger teams. I have some problems with non league teams competing in the competition but after esterdays match i think some of the teams could make the cup adventure a little more fun.

It took twenty minutes for the nerves to settle in the Airdrie team and in truth the Highland league team had the chance to go ahead. Finally it was Joe Cardle with his trade mark turn inside and shot that opened the scoring.

Cove Rangers were a determined well organised team and shorlty after we scored Robertson was forced to pull off a finger tip save to stop them getting back in to the match. 

Some wing play on the right hand side could have seen Airdrie stretch the lead, McDougall's cross form Paul Di Ggacomo whose header spun of the post and was cleared by the Cove defence.

On thirtyeight minutes Simon Lynch got hold of a deflected Joe Cardle pass and got our second goal after he dragged the ball around Stuart McKenzie and scored from a tight angle.

Three minutes later and it was game over, McDougall sent in another cross and Lynch headed home for his second.

Both teams done their best to entertain and create chances as the freezing fog began to decend.

What are your problems? They go through qualifying rounds and earn their place. They add to the competition, we sometimes see some good upsets, its a chance for some players to put themselves on a slightly bigger stage, it makes the competition less exclusive....where's your problem?

If Cove had been playing a third, or maybe even second division side, they would have ahd a shout at progressing.

I agree - it's called "the Scottish Cup", not "the Scottish SPL and SFL only Cup". Give these teams the chance to shine and get a few extra bob in their coffers, some of them will cause upsets from time to time but that's all part of the game of football. After all, even we aspire to beating the bigger clubs so why shouldn't Cove, Spartans, Whitefield Welfare, etc?

I just don't think it's a fair playing field, we have to jump through hopes to be able to compete in the professional arena (tongue firmly in cheek). I am not saying they shouldn't be allowed I'm not even saying they should have to meet the same demands put on professional clubs, but the demands should be standardised for all clubs.
