Tough trip over the hill confirmed

With the Evo-Stik League Division One North campaign not beginning until Saturday 21st August, Leigh Genesis have ensured optimum preparation for Mark Maddox's side ahead of the new season with a challenging pre-season fixture away to Evo-Stik Premier Division side Ossett Town.

Genesis will travel over the Pennines on Saturday 14th August for a 3pm kick off, their second visit of the summer to Yorkshire after facing North West Counties League side Silsden on Saturday 24th July.

Leigh's last visit to Ossett's Ingfield home was a successful one, with goals from Darren Mansaram and Brad Maylett sealing a 2-0 victory in August 2008.

Ossett finished last season in nineteenth position in the UniBond Premier League with twenty five points from thirty eight games, but were spared relegation due to Kings Lynn withdrawing from the league mid-season.

Following the recent cancellation of the planned friendly with Rossendale United on 31st July, Leigh's current pre-season schedule is as follows (all away from home);
Tuesday 13th July vs. Chadderton (7.45pm kick off)
Saturday 17th July vs. Grove Sports (3.00pm kick off)
Saturday 24th July vs. Silsden (3.00pm kick off)
Tuesday 27th July vs. Newton (7.45pm kick off)
Saturday 7th August vs. Cefn Druids (3.00pm kick off)
Saturday 14th August vs. Ossett Town (3.00pm kick off)

Good to see us getting a tough test ahead of the season starting - won't be there myself though as I'll be at Motherwell vs. Hibs.

They finished in a relegation place but the usual non league toing and froing meant only Durham have gone down.

i see so they got a classic rmi reprieve then cheers for that.

Mentioned in the article that it was because of King's Lynn going bump although that would only account for one relegation spot - can't remember exactly why second bottom have been reprieved as well, unless it was only going to be two down anyway??

didn't Newcastle Blue Star go bust before the season started?

Knew there was one I'd forgotten Paul, well remembered - don't think the UniBond ever stated that it was just one relegation spot because of being down to 20 teams though, did they? Just seems to be the way that it's worked out.
