Garry leaves Genesis

Garry Flitcroft

Leigh Genesis are on the hunt for a new manager to take over the reigns from departing manager Garry Flitcroft as the club look excitedly forward to their move to a new home at Crilly Park in time for next season.

After thirteen months at the helm, Flitcroft decided to resign from his position as manager after Saturday's 2-0 win over Wakefield in the final game at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium, and is rumoured to be interesting local rivals Chorley, who finished a full ten places and twenty two points behind Leigh in this season's UniBond League Division One North and sacked their manager, legendary ex-Leigh boss Steve Waywell, after their final game of the season.

Having taken over towards the end of last season, Flitcroft's side put together a run of four wins and two draws from just eight games, but it wasn't enough to prevent relegation from the UniBond Premier League.

This season saw Genesis finish just three points outside of the play-off places, winning twenty six out of fifty three games over the course of a season that featured several thumping victories, including a 5-1 win at Victory Park against his potential future employers.

The withdrawal of funding from Leigh's main backer earlier in the season was obviously a time of huge uncertainty at the club, but credit must be given to Flitcroft for not only managing to keep hold of the majority of his squad but also masterminding some terrific form in the latter half of the season that had the Leythers knocking on the promotion door.

On behalf of the club's supporters, I'd like to thank Garry for his efforts whilst in charge at the club and wish him the best of luck with whichever club he decides to join in the future.

yeh i must thank garry for what has been a great season in terms of on the field performances. I think garry has a great future in management considering what he has achieved here especially when he has kept the squad together even though they were not getting paid.
Cheers for all your hardwork garry especially during tough times and thanks for a season without relegation aswell.
goodluck!!

I am pleased that he left with another dig at the LSV in yesterdays Bolton News. Has there been anything in the local press in Leigh??

The worst kept secret is finally out eh. Very disappointed that he has chosen what I can only see is a sideways move, but good luck to him.

agreed! might be interesting to arrange a pre-season friendly (at crilly park)

Could be making this up, but I think there's a rule that prevents sides in the same division from playing against each other? Will be two interesting games against them though.

I went to their 2nd last home game v Clitheroe and in Waywells programme notes he was on about recruiting for the new season and said he had identified players but might be restricted by the budget. If that is so I cant imagine what Gary is doing there I always thought he would want to be sure of a a decent budget before taking on any job.

Unless of course the club have told Waywell one thing and Gary another!! It will be interesting to see how many ex Genesis from last season end up at Chorley.

Think your last paragraph must have a degree of accuracy Paul.

According to yesterdays NLP, Garry will be taking "six or seven" players from Genesis with him to Chorley

Well it can't be too hard to improve on last season's Chorley side on the evidence of the 5-1 game! I think it's a huge draw for players to play under Flitcroft, to be honest.

Must admit that it will be interesting to hear how Chorley are planning to afford all of our 'refugees'...
