A Jordan Stepien hat trick helped Leigh Genesis take their goal tally to an incredible twelve strikes in three days with a comprehensive mauling of rivals Prescot Cables at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium.
Garry Flitcroft made six changes from Wednesday night's 6-1 UniBond League Challenge Cup Fist Round thrashing of neighbours Warrington Town, but Genesis carried on from exactly where they left off, with visitors Prescot put to the sword in a similar fashion that will undoubtedly resonate throughout the rest of the league, many of whom were in FA Cup action this afternoon.
Having made eight changes to the side that lost to FC Halifax Town last weekend, Leigh made a slow start to Wednesday's emphatic victory, conceding a goal after less than a minute, but they were quickly out of the traps in their return to league action, taking the lead on just two minutes through a Jordan Stepien penalty after Tom Ince had been brought down in the area.
That lead was quickly doubled on fourteen minutes when Matt Jansen won a free kick on the edge of the area that was duly dispatched by Jamie Baguley, his first goal for the club since signing from FC United of Manchester in the summer.
Stepien scored his side's third of the afternoon on the half hour mark, drawing level with Chris Baguley's tally of six goals for the season in the process, after latching on to a through ball to slot past Prescot goalkeeper Andy Paxton.
Even before the half-time whistle could be blown, Leigh had equalled their highest league score of the season when, in almost identical fashion to his first strike, Jamie Baguley hammered home his second free kick of the afternoon to put Genesis four goals ahead at the break.
Prescot threatened sporadically, but were particularly wasteful of any chances that came their way, allowing Stephen Drench to keep what is surprisingly his first clean sheet of the season so far.
The one way traffic continued in the second half when Genesis were unlucky not to be rewarded for a real touch of class from Jansen, escaping from two defenders in one go with a simple deft touch before beating another man, only for a defender to nip in front of Stepien to clear Jansen's cross behind the goal for a corner kick.
It was only a matter of time before Leigh scored a fifth goal, and it arrived on seventy one minutes when Kris King broke down the left hand side, only for his run in to the area to be ended by a sliding challenge from Paul Lundon, with the referee showing little hesitation in awarding the second penalty of the afternoon. Jordan Stepien swept the ball home from twelve yards, following on Chris Thompson's four goals in midweek, though the first Leigh player to score a league hat trick since Phil Marsh scored three of Genesis' goals in the famous 4-2 victory away to FC United of Manchester in February.
The rout was completed with fourteen minutes remaining when substitute Chris Thompson combined superbly with fellow replacement Chris Baguley, the former sending a wonderful through ball for the latter to take towards goal and poke past Paxton for his seventh goal of the campaign.

In a wonderful display of football, Thompson was a whisker away from scoring a seventh goal for Leigh, but was unlucky to volley a pinpoint Stepien cross inches over Paxton's crossbar after Jamie Baguley had arrowed an incredible cross field ball over to Stepien.
The win lifts Leigh in to fifth position in the UniBond League First Division North, with a league trip to AFC Fylde next Saturday (3rd October, 3pm) being preceded by a Lancashire FA Co-Operative Challenge Trophy First Round tie away to neighbours Atherton Laburnum Rovers at Crilly Park on Tuesday evening (7:45pm kick off).

very surprised to see dicko and moz drinking beer in the stand. my first reaction was ur going to get banned for life but nothing came of it. even at the end we were all standing up all the time without no intervention from the stewards.

tis the bus for me next game yes matt she's nearly 11mths old now - its gone fast. will bring her more often if she can bring the luck of a 6-0 home win!!!!
If they don't score 6 on tuesday i'm not coming to another game....until I get back off me hols anyway.
