Gaffer praises Hoefkens and Pele

Tony Mowbray has given a massive confidence boost to both Carl Hoefkens and Pele by praising them for their efforts in last weekend’s crucial league victory over strugglers Middlesbrough. The pair, who are not Mowbray’s first choice at the back, stepped into their defensive shoes for the Baggies once more this weekend as mounting injury concerns ruled out anyone else.

Pele has struggled to even make the bench so far this season, but injuries to both Zuiverloon and Olsson saw him make a rare appearance as a sub this weekend.  Furthermore, injury to Leon Barnett saw Pele thrown into the heart of the Baggies defence, in what was his first Premiership appearance.

 

After being a first team regular last season, Carl Hoefkens has also had to show patience.  But he was rewarded four games ago when unfortunate injuries presented him with the opportunity for some first team football.  Hoefkens has now played the last four games for Albion, including a 2-0 victory over Peterborough in the FA Cup 3rd round replay. 

 

Mowbray has had nothing but praise for the pair, who look set to continue their first team spells as the injury build up continues.
