After securing the loan move of Marc-Antoine Fortune, January business seemed to be underway at the Hawthorns yesterday. But Tony Mowbray's efforts to strengthen his attacking forces seem to have taken a knock back as news comes that two of his alleged targets have signed deals at other Premiership clubs.

The return of Craig Beattie from his loan spell at Palace, and the arrival of Fortune from French side Nancy should ensure that ample cover is provided for the injured Ishmael Miller.

But efforts to increase striking options seem to have taken a set back as two players linked with moves to Albion have settled for deals elsewhere.

Newspapers this week had linked Mowbray with a possible move for Manchester United striker Manucho.  But the young striker yesterday secured a loan move to Hull City, where he will play the remainder of the season with Phil Brown's men.

A more widely reported West Brom target was Ariza Makukula, who had struggled to get regular first team action with Benfica.  But Bolton gaffer Gary Megson tied up a deal with the Portuguese side yesterday to bring the 27 year old striker to Bolton for the rest of the season on loan, with first option to snap him up at the end of the season in a deal believed to be worth around £4.5million.

Mowbray also appears to have ended any interest in Paris St Germain striker Peguy Luyindula.  The 29 year old had been highlighted as a possible January target for the club, but Mowbray has since commented that he is 'happy' with his present strike options, meaning that any transfer activity in that department is almost certainly over.
