Italian Toyota F1 Ace Jarno Trulli has given a frank estimation on Toyota's realistic targets for the 2008 Season. After a back-to-back test in Bahrain along with Ferrari, Jarno believes it is unrealistic to expect the Toyota team to be able to fight for podium finishes in the 2008.

Quoted by Autosprint magazine Trulli believes it is hard to see Toyota breaking into the Podium mould that was dominated by the Mclaren and Ferrari cars in 2007.

"Let's make this clear: in this situation, not only the Ferraris will be unmatchable for us, but also the McLarens, So, talking about getting some podiums is completely unrealistic," Trulli said.

However Trulli's comments did come with a hint of good news for Toyota fans by admitting that the TF108 is a big step forward on it's 2007 predesscor and has the belief that the Cologne based squad are in a better position for the up-coming season.

"Compared to 2007 the car has improved a lot in overall reliability and in the performance on worn tyres, which had been our main problem," he said.

Jarno also believes that while Podiums finishes are out of the question, the team can make the step forward to challenege on a race by race basis in the heart of the BMW-Sauber, Renault and Williams battle.

"Considering the problems BMW seem to suffer, maybe for us there's the chance of getting close to the second level teams like Renault, BMW and Williams, but it's impossible to do more than that''

Meanwhile up at the front, Jarno believes that Ferrari are way ahead of anyone else and have won the 2008 World Championship before the Season has even started.

"Looking at the behaviour of the Ferraris on the track is obviously depressing. They can brake wherever they want to but most of all they can accelerate wherever they want to, while I always have to be careful with getting on the power, which is not managed by traction control anymore. In my opinion, even compared to McLaren, they (Ferrari) are at least half a second faster per lap. Good night then, I feel the championship is already over even before the start," Trulli said.

well i think most of us here on the forum already new this, if you have two ferrari and two mclarens finishing the race, there toyotas chance of a podium gone...in other words the title of the autosport article should be "Jarno rules out racing against fearri and mclaren in 2008"

I see the positive side of Jarno, "expect for the worst and hope for the best." It would be better to win podiums without expecting it rather than with high expectations for wining but zero success. Well, I will still rely on the possibility of getting good breaks, you may never know.

Or maybe some kind of a strategy on their part ......just wondering this is the first time I heard of it after seeing the cars performing well in testing unlike in the past wherein the cars are performing below par in testing as well in races and ironically they will still say good things for the succeeding races ...

I think we may luck into a few podiums this year but i guess we will see. Racing and testing are two different things so we will have to wait and see i suppose =|

I think we might luck into a few Podiums this year to be fair. It was always out of the question for us to seriously challenge for them.
