More than 250,000 fans thronged into Central London on Tuesday evening just to catch a glimpse of Formula 1 action. Eight teams including Lucky Strike BAR Honda produced a memorable show on the capital's streets. What started out as a publicity stunt has encouraged the city's authorities to make a formal bid to host future British Grands Prix.



Huge crowds 20 deep in places lined the closed streets right through the heart of London's West End and they were all wowed by the sight and sound of the F1 cars as eight drivers - including past champ Nigel Mansell - all produced their own dramatic demo runs. Predictably the biggest cheer was reserved for local hero Jenson Button, Britain's top gun in the current World Championship standings. And Jenson didn't let his adorning public down, spinning the wheels on his BAR and revving its shrill Honda V10 engine as he blasted his way around the streets that are normally jammed by rows of double-decker buses.

"It was amazing to see so many people it must be the biggest crowd I've ever driven in front of," Jenson enthused. "It would be awesome if we could now see a real race in London. The noise would be phenomenal. It would be outrageous."
