Wales vs Ireland Classics

The night before the "Big One" a Welsh Classic XV will take on an Ireland Classic XV at the Brewery Field, Bridgend. For details of the fixture read on.

Its funny that the night before the international the "A" game used to be played full of up and coming players, now we have to watch a bunch of old codgers lace up their boots one more time! Only kidding if the Wales/England Classics game was anything to go by they can still show the youngsters a thing or 2.

It is hoped that the Ireland legends XV will contain some of the great Irish names of the past the likes of Nick Popplewell, Peter Clohessy, Keith Wood, Willie John McBride and Paddy Johns would certainly draw a large crowd.

The Former International Players Association, who have arranged and are staging the match, hope to raise tens of thousands of pounds for charity.

The Welsh Classics team that faced the English was:

Classic Wales: M Rayer; G Webbe, P Morgan, N Boobyer, D Manley; M Dacey, A Moore; J Pugh, G Jenkins, N Meek, T Copsey, D Jones, E Lewis, M Morris, R Phillips (capt). Replacements: J Thomas, D Williams, R Bidgood, D Evans, P John, G Pearce, J Griffiths, D McIntosh, L Gerrard, S Martin, C Evans.

Rowland Phillips will skippered the Wales team that includes the likes of Mike Rayer, Glenn Webbe, Malcolm Dacey, Garin Jenkins, Tony Copsey, Derwyn Jones and Emyr Lewis.

There is also and under 11s sevena side competition with sides from Bridgend, Pontypridd, Mid Wales and the Rhondda.
