Leighton Samuel has resigned as chairman of the new Bridgend Pontypridd regional team. For further news on this story including a message from John Samuel read on.

We reported earlier today that Leighton Samuel was to stand down as chairman of the Bridgend Pontypridd regional team. The following statement has been issued to the official Bridgend messageboard by John Samuel:

"Please note that Leighton has withdrawn from the Regional Board.

He still owns 50% of the regional team and will have his interest looked after by myself, Derrick King and another new board member.

Regional rugby was supposed to relieve the benefactors of financial support and each region would be backed by W.R.U. money. However the first pay day for the players was June 30th and insufficient funds arrived from the Union to cover the salaries; and therefore it was Leighton who again had to pay the players their wages.

He feels that we have made very little progress and the he therefore will expect everyone involved to honour their word and meet their liabilities.

Leighton is a decision maker and he always clears his desk every day. He does not "stew" over matters and the lack of progress with certain decisions has frustrated him.

To conclude I would like to state that his desire to win the Heineken Cup is as strong as ever and his support for the region is total."
