Saturday 22 February 2003. Links Park, Montrose. Scottish League Division 3, Montrose 1 (McKechnie 35), Queen's Park 1 (Whelan 50)
The first half of this match was a fast but scrappy affair, with neither team able to put their foot on the ball long enough to play any decent football. However, with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Gregor McKechnie tried a speculative effort from just outside the box. Former Brechin stopper, Mark Cairns, dived to receive the ball but fumbled it into the net for a welcome opener.
MOntrose began the second half in brighter fashion, but Queen's equalised against the run of play when they forced a couple of corners and Whelan stabbed it home after 50 minutes in a goalmouth scramble.
Montrose sent on Gibson for the injured Conway, then Webster for Craig who had performed well on the right wing, and Brand for the injured Kerrigan, but although we were putting together some good passing against a now defensive-looking Queen's side, we just could not make the breakthrough.
Craig and Ferguson were Montrose's best performers, Fergie making a marvellous tackle in the box when it looked like Queen's would score.
