Third Division Wrexham have confirmed that they are interested in signing Caersws' prolific striker Graham Evans. However Wrexham manager Denis Smith is likely to face strong competition for the former Aston Villa striker's signature.

 

 

Widening the net

WREXHAM are widening the net in the search for new, young players.

Manager Denis Smith revealed today he is looking at rising starlets in the Welsh Premier League.

One of the players he has looked at is Caersws striker Graham Evans, son of Bluebirds’ manager and former Wrexham defender Mickey Evans.

Evans, 22, a civil servant, has already scored 23 goals this season and his dad believes he is good enough for League football. “He doesn’t give the ball away and, to be fair to him, he’s done well for us,” his dad said today.

“He’s useful in the air although he’s not the biggest of lads. We keep reading and hearing these things about so-and-so being interested in him. But we’ll just keep playing him at this level until perhaps something happens.”

Evans had two seasons at Aston Villa but no full-time contract was offered to him so he came back to play in his father’s team.

Smith said: “We have watched the lad and there’s no doubt he has something to offer. We’re also looking at other players in that league. I mention that just in case some people think we don’t spread the net in the search for new talent.”

Money - or the lack of it - is the big stumbling block at Wrexham and many other clubs. Smith said: “It’s not just this club, either. What we’re finding now is even first division clubs are skint and when we ask about possible loan players many of them have already been approached by hard-up first division clubs.

“I know fans like new blood coming in but, believe me, it’s very difficult in the present financial climate for many, many clubs. What I intend doing is to work it as it happens.
