Bangor City were beaten 2-0 by Yugoslavian giants FK Sartid today in the UEFA Cup Qualifying round, 2nd leg. The scoreline was enough to overturn Bangor's famous 1-0 victory in the home leg a fortnight ago, as Sartid progress 2-1 on aggregate.

BRAVE BANGOR BOW OUT AT SARTID

 

 

Despite a slender 1-0 lead in the 1st leg, Bangor City failed to progress to the first round proper of the UEFA Cup, as they lost 2-0 in Yugoslavia. Goals from Milorad Zecevic and Nenad Mirosavljevic were enough to seal a comfortable victory and overturn the deficit.

As expected, Sartid attacked Bangor from the kick-off and it took just 14 minutes for the aggregate scores to be level, as striker Milorad Zecevic headed home from a left-wing cross. The 'Citizens' were without key midfield players in Gareth Willaims and Owain Tudor Jones and created few efforts on goal.

It was not until the second half that Sartid scored their all important second goal. On 58 minutes Mirosavljevic picked up possession just outside the area and ended a fine solo run with a low shot from 10 yards which gave Bangor goalkeeper, Philip Priestley no chance.

City were given a lifeline just 3 minutes later when Zeljko Damjanovic was sent off for a professional foul on the edge of the penalty box. Despite having an extra man for the last half hour, Bangor failed to score a vital away goal and it will be the Yugoslavian giants who will progress through to the next round with a narrow 2-1 aggregate victory.

Bangor can be proud of their two performances against a side who hammered Scottish Premier League club Dundee, 5-2 in last season's Intertoto Cup. Well done to the 'Citizens' for their famous victory at the Racecourse a fortnight ago, and for helping to raise the profile of the League of Wales.
