A resilient Rushden and Diamonds side thoroughly deserved their third away victory of the season, 2-1, over Lincoln City. Goals from youngster David Bell and midfielder Stuart Wardley handed Diamonds the victory. Manager, Brian Talbot, opted for David Bell in midfield once again, leaving Jamaican international Paul Hall on the bench for the first time in his league career at Rushden. Despite reports of a tactical re-shuffle recently, the team lined-up in a familiar 4-4-2 formation with Robert Duffy included alongside Duane Darby. Onandi Lowe sat out the game due to a suspension after picking up 5 yellow cards in the league this term. Gary Mills returned from suspension to take up his central midfield role.

Diamonds started the brightest and had a goal from Duffy disallowed for offside after only four minutes. This attack from the right, orchestrated by Bell, was a sign of things to come in the first half. Often, Bell found space, usually after beating his marker, and delivered some quality crosses. It was Bell who opened the scoring after 27 minutes, lashing a free-kick at goal. The ball squirmed through the legs of the unfortunate Lincoln keeper.

Ten minutes after the break, Diamonds stamped their authority on the game. A superb Duffy cross from the right was headed past the despairing keeper. Wardleys celebration, sliding in front of the Lincoln stand, nearly provoked a reaction from the home fans but their vow of silence continued.

The Lincoln supporters had something to shout about seven minutes before the end when Peter Gains shot skidded past Turley. Predictably, they did not get excited about the goal, more so about the referee.

Diamonds hung on to gain all three points, largely due to Barry Hunters excellent defensive display. Also, the youngsters are all progressing brilliantly, especially Bell and Duffy yesterday who proved they are ready for regular first team football. The future for this squad is looking bright due, by no small means, to Talbots management this season. He got yesterday just about right.
