Our first ever match in the FA Cup was a 1st qualifying game against West Herts (now Watford FC) on 13th October 1894. We won 3-2 with two goals from Don Goodall and the opener scored by Peter Hunter on his debut. Lets look at some early round FA Cup matches involving Spurs,

Our first ever match in the FA Cup was a 1st qualifying game against West Herts (now Watford FC) on 13th October 1894. We won 3-2 with two goals from Don Goodall and the opener scored by Peter Hunter on his debut. We got as far as the fourth qualifying round that season when Luton put us out 4-0 in a replay after a 2-2 home draw. Cubberly and Eccles scoring the two Spurs Goals.

Lets move on to 1901 when our first opponents (and the first FA Cup game to be played at White Hart Lane) were Preston North End. over 15000 supporters gathered in the stadium on 9th February to see us draw the game 1-1 with a goal from Sandy Brown. The replay at Prestons ground on 13th February saw us beat them 4-2 with a goal from John Cameron and a Sandy Brown Hat-trick. As you of course know we went on to become the only non-league side (since the Football Leagues formation) to win the cup and Sandy Brown scored in every round (15 goals in total) beating Preston, Bury, Reading (after a replay) West Bromwich Albion and and Sheffield united in the Final (again requiring a replay).

Moving on now to 1921 our first opponents here at White Hart Lane on the 8th January 1921 were Bristol Rovers. This was a game we won 6-2. Thomas Clay opened the scoring with a penalty and the other goals came from Bert Smith, Fanny Walden, Jimmy Seed, James Cantrell and Bert Bliss.

Onto 1961 and our third Round opponents on 7th January were Charlton Athletic. 54,969 were at the lane to see two Les Allen goals and a Tery Dyson effort set us on our way to the Cup and League Double with a 3-2 victory. The following year (1962) we were drawn away to Birmingham City and we fought out a 3-3 draw on January 6th, A brace from Jimmy Greaves and one from Cliff Jones seeing us through to a replay which we won 4-2 at the Lane on the 10th January in front of 62,917 fans. Goals that day were provided by Les Allen, Jimmy Greaves and two from Terry Medwin.

1967 next and again we had an away draw, this time the opponents were Millwall. The game at the Den on 28th January ended 0-0 so once again back to White Hart Lane to win 1-0 courtesy of Alan Gilzean in front of over 58,000.

Onto the eighties now and in 1981 it was to be another away tie against a London side that would end 0-0. this time the opponents would be QPR on 3rd January. We went on to win the replay on the 7th January at the Lane 3-1 with goals from Tony Galvin, Glenn Hoddle and Garth Crooks. QPR were of course our opponents in the final the following year (1982) but that time the third round opponents were another small London club by the name of Woolwich. On the 2nd January 1982 a crowd of 38421 saw us beat the scum 1-0 and make a huge hero out of the scorer Garth Crooks. Two back to back FA Cups and a run that saw us play outside of London only twice, both Semi-finals. The draw against Wolves (the replay of course being at Highbury) and the victory over Leicester at Villa Park.

And so to the last FA Cup Victory in 1991 which started with a tricky away tie up at Blackpool on the 5th January. Nine and a half thousand saw us win 1-0 with a Paul Stewart goal. We went on that year to beat Oxford United, Portsmouth, Notts county, that small club from down the road again and of course Nottingham Forest in the Final.


Its time once again to look to our traditions in this competition and time to stand up and be counted.
