After having read this 'article' on the internet you really do have to wonder sometimes what damage can be done with a loose tongue and bit of media skullduggery.......
Spurs boss Martin Jol revealed a bid had been made for the winger following the 2-0 home defeat by Everton prompting a furious Boro chief executive Keith Lamb to issue a statement.
Lamb told the club's official website:
"(Chairman) Steve Gibson and I are appalled at the way Tottenham conduct their business. We are shocked and disappointed that they should talk publicly about their interest in one of our players."
" They have not made a £10million offer for Stewart - and would be wasting their time if they did In actual fact, they made a derisory offer. I won't even be responding to the bid because they knew in advance that it would be unacceptable"
"We can only consider that it was a mischievous attempt to unsettle Stewart and cause a problem between the player and his hometown club. If that is the case it won't succeed - and we won't be giving their offer even the courtesy of a rejection."
"We would be more interested in buying Aaron Lennon from Spurs than selling Stewart because we remain extremely ambitious to take this club forward. In fact, during the course of our talks with Spurs, we have already expressed our interest in signing Lennon."
Meanwhile Tottenham coach Martin Jol declared his interest in Downing.
"We made a very good bid for him. Our highest bid to be honest" he said.
"I have to talk with the chairman later on about it. Today you could see against 10 men you have to stretch them. But we could not do that. He is the number one player we want. We want the best and for us he is the best player."
Firstly who mentioned to Boro chief executive Keith Lamb the figure of £10m?
Martin Jol did'nt!
The figure of £10m is media speculation yet it has angered Boro to the point that he has thrown his toys out of the pram and now stated that they want Lennon. You would think that Keith Lamb would have had enough dealings with the media to know how underhanded they can be.
Secondly why oh why has Martin Jol even mentioned Downing, I am sure that this is against Tottenham policy and just creates problems with the other teams 'chief executives'. It makes it look as though we have done it to unsettle the player and gives the media ammunition to have another go at Tottenham.
I would hope and expect that Tottenham are not underhanded with their approach to signing or attempting to sign new players, it is bound to upset a team when another rival team make an offer for one of their best players.
However does this just show that the team are concerned because they know the player will also want the move? If they were happy that the player is happy to stay then perhaps the best thing to do is just say 'thanks but no thanks' and leave it at that!
Another bad result at WHL to Everton, Tottenham's bad performance made Everton look better than they actually are(One loss to Bolton, a win against Sheffield United and a loss against Everton), I have said it before but if Tottenham are to be taken seriously then we really should be beating the Bolton's and Everton's of the EPL.
I am sure that this is just a blip but hope that this blip does not get much bigger.
I am confident that MJ will get it right eventually but also hope that this 'blip' does not have too much of an effect to our standing at the end of the season! One good thing at the moment is that Liverpool, Arse*al and Chelsea's start to the new season has also not been up to expectation as they are all having their own 'blips' with only Man U having the good start.
Although we have not played any of the big boys yet we do start with Man U up next!!!!
Some improvement please Mr. Jol.
