The Somerset all-rounder has his chance after being called into the England squad for the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka as replacement for the injured Andrew Flintoff.

The 24-year-old said: "People get chances through people's misfortunes.

"It is one of those opportunities where you have to take it with both hands because it might be the only one you get. That is what I am looking to do; get in, impress and hopefully stay in.

"When Marcus Trescothick was picked he was only averaging 27 for Somerset. He played one great innings against Glamorgan and Duncan Fletcher was watching.

"It can happen through one innings. It is only a short trip but I will be doing my utmost to stay in there."

England play their first match against Zimbabwe on Wednesday.
