Russian Elena Dementieva defeats compatriot Elena Bovina in the Gaz de France final on Sunday. Dementieva is the first one to win the Gaz de France Stars title as presented by injured Kim Clijsters. This years two times Grand Slam finalist Dementieva took the title in three sets 0-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Elena
Bovina said she played like a rollercoaster, going up and down. “In the second
set I took it a little easier, that was my mistake”, she said about losing the
second set 6-0 after winning the first 6-0.
“I had
absolutely no chance in the first set”, Dementieva said about losing the set on
love. “It is difficult to say how this match was won”, she added. The course of
the match was going up and down like Bovina described in her statement.
Dementieva
had to thank her sparring partner who helped her out very well today and “he
was part of this victory” she said. They could practice service returns that
come over the net with the speed of a 150 km. Bovina does hit her serves in and
sometimes faster than 150 km.
In only 24
minutes the 189 cm tall Bovina took the first set on love. Dementieva had not
found an answer yet for taking care of those hard hitters coming from fellow
Muscovite Bovina. Dementieva’s serves were to slow to make a dent in Bovina’s
defense.

In the
second set Bovina like she said took it to easy and Dementieva’s strong
gameplay was too good and took Bovina by surprise. Dementieva won rallies
starting with serves well under the 100 km. Even hitting a service winner at 95
km.
Bovina got
her wake up call after losing the second set on love. The third set was closer
then the previous two. Again Dementieva came out the better player, making use
of her ability to win rallies, quick on her feet and making the right decisions
in a split second.
At 4 all in
the third set Dementieva is attacking every ball from the service till the
point is finished. She leads 15-30 as Bovina makes it 30 all with beautiful
defending her court at the net. An unforced error wide gives Dementieva her
chance to break and she hits a solid winner to take the break and the 5-4 lead.

Serving for
the match Dementieva feels that Bovina is going to take advantage of her weak
serve. Bovina sees the chance and is on a 0-40 lead. She hits two winners and
Dementieva makes her unforced error at the net.
Dementieva
needs a second serve which is heavily attacked by Bovina to tie the score 5 all
but she hits the net, 15-40. Dementieva’s winner gets her to 30-40 and she is
holding on firmly. Again hitting a winner Dementieva gets to deuce. And with an
attacking forehand line drive she takes advantage and matchpoint. Bovina hit
another attacking ball by Dementieva into the net, Dementieva takes the match
in three 0-6, 6-0, 6-4.
After the
match Dementieva said Bovina was dominating the first set and that she had no
chance at all to win that set. “This title is the first of the year and it
means very much to me, I don’t take it as a Tier III every match is important
and every title is different. It feels wonderful”.
“It was a
tough final and I hope to have a change again next time. It was a good decision
to come and play in Hasselt, it is a good start for the indoor season. I am
also looking forward playing in Filderstadt were you play the best players in
the field.”
Kim
Clijsters, who had to withdraw from her match against Bovina earlier and who
wont play in Filderstadt, came out on the court to present the winner with a
trophy. “I was surprised to see Kim on court and handing me the trophy. It's to
bad that she is injured and I hope that she can come back soon.”
Although Elena already has a Porsche she is hoping to win another one in Filderstadt. She won’t be driving it to Moscow to bring it home, she doesn’t own a drivers license yet. Her brother is driving her Porsche at the moment.
