Maria Sharapova is the second Russian after Anastasia Myskina, who won the French Open, to win a Grand Slam title. “Playing is much easier than to watch”, Sharapova said after the match about how nervous her dad must have been in the players box. Questioned about whether she realized that she just won Wimbledon she said: “It is unreal”.

The way she played against two times winner Serena Williams was real and she played really good as well. The American could not find a way to attack the young Russian born who is living in the USA for half of her life.

In the 4th game of the first set Sharapova hits a good and deep service return on 30-40. Williams hits the ball long and Sharapova breaks for the first time. After holding her own serve for a 4-1 lead the Russian breaks again.

Hitting a deep return against the alley Williams was outplayed and 0-15 down. She could tie hitting an ace. Sharapova leads 15-30 when Williams hits the ball long after trying to play serve and volley. A double fault gives Sharapova two breakpoints 15-40 but she hits the next ball wide and Serena comes back to deuce after winning a 19 shots rally.

Sharapova finds a way to attack the American and has advantage but she could not convert her third breakpoint. With a good serve Williams comes back to deuce hitting a ball long she hands Sharapova her 4th breakpoint. The Russian hits a solid backhand service return to take a 5-1 lead.

In the 26th minute of the match Sharapova has her first setpoint after she knocked off two breakpoints against her. Making use of her good serving abilities Sharapova comes to her second setpoint but fails when she hits a double fault. She is playing her second serve as if it was her first knowing that a low speed serve could come back as a winner from Williams’ racket.

On deuce Williams hits the ball into the net and Sharapova converts her 4th breakpoint and the set when Williams is having problems returning Sharapova’s serve. In the 30th minute of the match Serena Williams hits the ball into the net and the first set goes to the Grand Slam final debutante, 6-1.

After winning her service game on love Serena Williams breaks Sharapova in the sixth game of the second set. A third double fault in the match gives Williams 0-15, an unforced error 0-30 but Sharapova hits a forehand winner and wrong footed Williams. A return winner hands Williams a breakpoint, Sharapova comes back to 30-40 but that is not enough when she hits a miser. Williams lead 4-2 in games.

In the following service game Sharapova attacks with even more skilful shots. On 15-40 Sharapova attacks Williams second serve, the American hits the ball wide and the Russian breaks for 3-4.

Sharapova ties 4 all playing a running lob and deep attacking shots. Maria is leading 15-40 in the 9th game but Serena saves three breakpoints and comes back to advantage. A winning lob gets Maria to deuce. Serena misses a volley after Maria played a well-placed backhander. On advantage Maria plays the ball left and right and Serena slips, just in time to hit the ball she hits it wide. Maria Sharapova is leading 5-4 and serving for the match.

In the 42nd minute of the second set Sharapova is on match point, 40-15. After hitting an unforced error for 40-30, Maria hits a good serve; Serena is unable to return over the net and after 73 minutes of playing Maria Sharapova is the next Wimbledon Champion.
