Lindsay Davenport, the 1998 champion, cruised past Italy's Maria Elena Camerin to reach the third round of the US Open for the fifth year in a row Davenport, who beat Camerin 6-2, 6-4 used all her power placing the ball accurately keeping Camerin at the back of the court. The Italian did show few sings of claiming an extra game but was never going to beat Davenport. The 6th seed will now play Hungary's Melinda Czink, who surprisingly beat 28th seed Lisa Raymond 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Amelie Mauresmo established herself in the race for the US Open crown by beating compatriot Stephanie Cohen-Aloro 6-2, 6-2. Mauresmo reached the semi-finals last year and possibly could go further this time round.

Mauresmo will now face Russian junior champion Maria Kirilenko in the third round after she beat German Anca Barna 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.

"I thought I played a good match," said Mauresmo, who finally looks fit after being forced to miss Wimbledon.

"I think every part of my game was working very well."

Top seed Kim Clijsters booked her place in the third round, crushing American Laura Granville 6-1, 6-1 in 49 minutes. Clijsters who is the major favourite for her first slam will now face Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, who beat Hungary's Petra Mandula 6-3, 6-3.

Daniela Hantuchova showed signs of her old self against Julia Vakulenko which possibly could have been a exit for the Slovak. Hantuchova raced through the first set 6-0 with Vakulenko taking a medical time out for a foot injury mid-way. The second set was close and looked has if the Ukraine star could gain the second set but lost on a tiebreak.

Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn will be her third round opponent, who ousted 18th seed Patty Schnyder 6-4 6-3.

Barbara Schett's year could not go any worse, after winning her first round match she looked has if the third round beckoned serving for the match 6-3, 5-3 against veteran Amanda Coetzer. But Coezter's determination and athletic ability around the court clawed her back into the match claiming the second set 7-5. Schett gave up in the third set after seeing her chance disappear in the second set. Coezter the 14th seed goes through to the third round, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Russian Vera Zvonareva, the 13th seed, also had a hard job overcoming American Ashley Harkleroad 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
