Top seed Lindsay Davenport was sent packing after losing in a three set battle to unseeded Italian Silvia Farina Elia at Eastbourne Davenport in her first match since pulling out of her 4th round match against Conchita Martinez at the French Open lost the first set 6-4 but rallied back to win the second 6-3.

The third set seemed to go the Italian's way racing to a 5-1 lead with Davenport pegging back for a third set tie-break but still lost 7-3.

Third seed Jennifer Capriati was in big trouble in the second set after winning the first 6-1 she quickly fell 5-0 behind against fellow American Amy Frazier. Her strong baseline game allowed her to claw back into the second set winning it 7-5.

Defending champion Chanda Rubin cruised past Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-0, 6-3.
