Venus Wililams was out of sorts whereas Lindsay Davenport was patchy and Jennifer Capriati and Kim Clijsters set the pace by raising their game and looking very comfortable Davenport and Tulyaganova both found it difficult to hold serve and the 7th seed found herself 5-4 down with serving to stay in the set and gifting the Uzbekistan 3 set points which Lindsay managed to save. Then went on to pick her game up and claim the first set 7-5.

The second set was more of an easy occassion for Davenport storming to a 5-1 lead sealing the victory and a place in round three against Nathalie Dechy after she beat Spain's Gala Leon Garcia.

After the match Davenport said that she was lucky to get through, "It was one of those days when you are lucky. Your opponent doesn't play great and you are happy to get through. I just kind of did what I had to win"

Kim Clijsters continued her good form ousting Marlene Weingartner with great ease 6-2, 6-2 advancing to the round where she lost last year but this won't happen again as the Belgian is in superb form looking for her first Grand Slam that she could claim next Saturday.

Venus Williams once again in disastrous form advanced to the third round with a 3 set win over Evie Dominikovic of Australia. The third seed's errors started creeping up in the second set after winning the first 6-3 then found herself 5-3 down in the second set breaking he Australian's serve to serve to stay in the set but was broken to lose it 6-4.

William's looks nowhere near her best and could possibly lose to Jennifer Capriati as they are scheduled to meet in the quarter-finals.
The 7th seed Jennifer Capriati picked up her game against Marion Bartoli of France strolling through 6-3 6-0 looking in tremendous form playing with her baseline groundstrokes helping winners from all over the court. Jennifer Capriati meets Vakulenko when she beat 32 seed Francesca Schiavone.

The Serbian Jelena Dokic lost to Slovenian Tina Pisnik in another 3 set battle 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Dokic's unforced errors rose has her game started to crumble after winning the first set and her serve depatured her game altogether with her losing.

Tina Pisnik now plays Conchita Martinez in the third round after she beat Emmanulle Gargliardi 7-5, 6-2.
