World Number 2 Venus Williams has pulled out of the Italian Masters which begins a week before the French Open and instead is taking a week off to rest She took the decision after looking at her schedule which would have consisted of 4 consecutive tournaments before the French Open which she reached the final last year losing to sister Serena.

Venus also pulled out of the tournament last year after tendonitis forced her to withdraw before her clash against Anna Kournikova but stated that she would return next year.

"I'm disappointed to have to withdraw from Rome this year. I've always enjoyed playing in Rome as it is a great tournament in one of the most beautiful cities in the world and I plan on returning next year"

Alexandra Stevenson will now replace Williams in the draw.
