Fourth seed Alexandra Stevenson saved four match points before defeating Australia's Samantha Stosur in a two hour and 13 minute battle.

The American fought back in fine style to edge Stosur 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (10-8) in the first round match.

Stevenson will meet Japan's Saori Obata after she beat Vanessa Webb 6-4, 6-0.

Sixth seed Laura Granville became the first quarter-finalist by beating fellow American Sandra Cacic 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 in the second round.
