Third seed Amanda Coetzer produced a fine fightback to book her place in the second round.

The South African eventually saw off Angelika Roesch of Russia 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 to go through.

She will now play American Sarah Taylor, who beat compatriot Bethanie Mattek 6-4, 6-4.

Eighth seed Jill Craybas was the only seed beaten on the opening day, the American beaten 6-1, 6-1 by Alina Jidkova of Russia.
