Mary Pierce was beaten in straight sets by unknown Flavia Pennetta at the quarter-final stage of the Indian Open which is the first ever WTA Tournament to be held. Mary Pierce was a surprising loser to Italy's Flavia Pennetta in the quarter-finals in Hyderabad.

Pierce, the No 4 seed, was throughly outplayed by the world No 87 and she went down 7-6, 6-3. Pennetta will now meet No 2 seed Tamarine Tanasugarn, who beat Maria Kirilenko of Russia.

Akiko Morigami continued her fantastic form in the tournament with another straight sets win over eight seed Silvka Talaja. Morigami is still to lose her first set in the entire tournament.
