Tatiana Panova caused the upset of the tournament by upsetting No.1 seed and World Number 3 Jennifer Capriati. Capriati fell at the first hurdle last year but still went on to win the Australian Open. Capriati who won the first set 6-4 looked to easily win this match and many people and probably herself expected to beat the small Russian very easily. But Panova fought her way back into the match and sealed victory 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

"It is the start of the year, my first match back, so it's to be expected that I'm not going to play the greatest," the American said.

The world number three struggled to find her rhythm against Panova as a swirling wind made serving difficult.

Tuesday's other second-round match, fourth seed Daniela Hantuchova defeated Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn 7-6 (7-2) 6-1.

And in first round contests, seventh seed Chanda Rubin beat Russia's Elena Dementieva 6-3 7-5, while fellow Americans Alexandra Stevenson and Lisa Raymond also went through. Lisa Raymond now plays Lindsay Davenport in next round.

Anna Kournikova was beaten again 6-4 2-6 6-1 by qualifier Janette Husarova.

Yet another tournament without a win for Anna has she struggles to find her way back into the groove of the circuit. She desperately needs to win a title this year and prove to the media and the other girls that she can do. We shall see in 2003 if this becomes a reality or just another dream.
