Without hitting one ball over the net the Swiss No.1 seed Patty Schnyder got her self a spot in the semifinals at Uncle Toby’s in Gold Coast. Schnyder’s opponent the No.6 seed American Meghann Shaughnessy had to withdraw before the match started due to an ankle injury caused in her previous match.
Meghann Shaughnessy twisted her ankle in the last moments of her match against Russia’s Lina Krasnoroutskaya. The American was getting treatment in the evening after the match, this could not prevent her from having to cancel her single and doubles matches. “Its tough for the tournament” said Shaughnessy “I can’t really move.”
Barbara Schett, the No. 8 seed from
Austria, was beaten by Nathalie Dechy from France who got her first victory
against Schett. The second seed Dechy took the match 6-4, 6-2.
The Swiss Marie Gaianeh Mikaelian
defeated Maria Sanchez Lorenzo from Spain 6-4, 2-6, 6-4
