WTA create Morariu Award for valour and bravery

The Corina Morariu Courage Award is to honor someone with the valour and bravery shown by Morariu. The award established on last Saterday will be presented to Corina Morariu for the first time in November at the 2002 WTA Championships at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles The Floridian overcame leukaemia last year and returned to compete in the US Open this year after a 14-month absence from the tour

She was knocked out in the first round of the singles by top seed Serena Williams, but made it through to the semi-finals of the mixed doubles with Justin Gimmelstob and the quarter-finals of the women's doubles with Kimberly Po-Messerli.
