Okay, so it wasn't the most thrilling game of all time, but Cardiff have kicked off their pre-season with a confident 4-0 victory against non-league, Merthyr Tydfil. Layton Maxwell's cracking goal was the probably the highlight of the match for City fans. Story Opener:

Hundreds of Cardiff fans made the short tip up to Penydarren Park, to watch the Bluebirds kick off their pre-season campaign against non-league side, Merthyr Tydfil. It was both teams first friendly fixture, and a chance of them to get back to full fitness for the new season.

Kick-off was even delayed by 15 minutes to get everyone in for the start!

City named a different side for each half, and the first half line up was as follows:

Neil Alexander

Daniel Gabbidon

Rhys Weston

Scott Young

Gary Croft

Graham Kavanagh

Jason Bowen

Gareth Whalley

Willie Boland

Mark Bonner

Andy Campbell

The game started lively, and Cardiff had all the early pressure, Kavanagh putting Cardiff's opening chance wide.

Cardiff took the lead just 8 minutes in as Andy Campbell gave the Bluebirds a deserved lead with a well-taken goal, leaving Tydfil 'keeper, Mark Thomas with no chance.

From here on, Cardiff dominated the game, and Merthyr's best chance came on the 25 minutes when as a fine Merthyr effort rattled Alexander's crossbar, and the headed rebound went just over.

Only minutes later though, Cardiff have doubled their lead. Captain fantastic, Graham Kavanagh scored a tap-in, after the 'keeper fumbled his first effort.

The game went a little quiet after this, with Merthyr having the next best opportunity, with a free kick from inside the area was blocked by the City wall.

Gareth Whalley had a good debut for the Bluebirds, and although he didn't look 100% fit, he passed the ball well and created some good chances.

Possibly the most entertaining moment of the first half was when Penydarren Park welcomed a streaker onto the pitch. The middle-aged man was left to strut his stuff for a few moments before running back into the stands!

Half Time Score - Merthyr Tydfil 0-2 Cardiff City

Cardiff's line up for the second half was:

Mark Walton

Chris Barker

Spencer Prior

James Collins

Andy Legg

Ceri Hughes

Des Hamilton

Leyton Maxwell

Josh Low

Robert Earnshaw

Leo Fortune-West

Although the second half performance wasn't as good as the first, Cardiff still dominated and Maxwell and Prior both went close within the first fifteen minutes of the half.

Josh Low was disappointing, although he showed that he still has bags of pace, his crossing was very poor, and is a part of his game that he must work on if he is to stay in first team contention at Ninian Park.

City increased there lead to 3-0 when Leyton Maxwell put home a superb goal, when he rifled a shot from about 35 yards out and it flew into the top corner of the Merthyr net. This goal was a great way to round off an impressive 45 minutes for Maxwell, who defiantly deserves more first team games next season.

With only a few minutes left on the clock, Leo Fortune-West added another goal to the Bluebirds' tally, after he wildly swung his leg at a flick from Robert Earnshaw and the ball ended up in the back of the net.
