Cardiff City will play better and lose this season, but did enough to take all three points against Watford in the rain on Tuesday night.
| Cardiff City 3-0 Watford - Match Report |
| Cardiff City, after playing one of
their re-arranged games due to International cancellations, moved up to 11th
spot after beating Watford are now only four points off the top six. However
City won despite producing one of their most disappointing performances of
the season. Conditions were difficult, and the rain kept the crowd down to just over 14,000. Given that Watford brought a few hundred - 4,000 Cardiff fans who watched the West Ham game didn't turn up. But that is another story.... Cardiff played the same team that had drawn with West Ham, the only change being on the bench with Whalley being replaced by Fleetwood. In his usual honest way Manager Lennie Lawrence said, "We did not play anywhere near as well as we can but we defended excellently. There was some great defensive blocks and defensive headers out there. Our back four are playing exceptionally well at the moment. The key was to get the first goal and we did that. Let's be fair, 3-0 flattered us. Watford had a lot of the ball in the first-half." Cardiff took the lead with a goal, and his 100th senior one, from Robert Earnshaw who cleverly anticipated hesitation in the Watford defence to score at the Canton End. The goal took the initiative away from the visitors and the result was never really in doubt. Second half goals from Tony Vidmar with a close range shot and Man of the Match Graham Kavangh rounded off a good result but a mediocre display. The first division is proving to be less of a challenge than many thought, and players who struggled last season are relishing the extra time they are offered - play offs are a distinct possibility... |
